Still Performing, But Running on Empty
You’re keeping up with your responsibilities, meeting expectations, and doing what needs to get done.
From the outside, it looks like you’re handling everything.
Internally, it feels different.
You’re mentally drained, harder to motivate, and it takes more effort to do things that used to feel simple. You might feel disconnected from your work, your routine, or even from yourself.
There’s a level of pressure you’ve been carrying for a while, and it’s starting to catch up.

How Burnout and Overwhelm Can Show Up
You might notice:
-
Feeling exhausted even after resting
-
Trouble focusing, decision fatigue, or mental fog
-
Feeling detached, flat, or not fully present
-
Irritability or low patience for things that didn’t used to bother you
-
A constant sense of pressure, even when nothing urgent is happening
You might also find yourself thinking:
-
You might also find yourself thinking:
-
Why does everything feel harder than it should?
-
I’m doing everything I’m supposed to, so why do I feel like this?
-
Is this burnout, or do I need to change something completely?

Why Burnout Doesn’t Always Look Obvious
Burnout doesn’t always mean falling apart.
You might still be performing well, showing up consistently, and keeping things together.
That’s part of why it goes unnoticed.
When you’re used to functioning at a high level, it’s easy to keep pushing past the signs that something isn’t working anymore.
Over time, that pressure builds instead of resolving.

How This Might Be Showing Up
It doesn’t always look like complete burnout.
It can look like:
-
You get through your day, but feel drained by the end of it
-
You keep up with responsibilities, but everything feels harder than it should
-
You’re constantly thinking about what needs to change, but don’t know where to start
-
You feel disconnected from your work or routine, even if you’re still doing well
-
You don’t feel fully present, even during time that’s supposed to be relaxing
If any of this sounds familiar, it’s worth paying attention to.

Why This Work Is Different
Burnout doesn’t always show up in obvious ways.
You might still be performing well, meeting expectations, and keeping things moving, while internally feeling drained, disconnected, or unsure how long you can keep going like this.
Sometimes it’s burnout.
Sometimes it’s a combination of pressure, long-standing patterns, and how your system has learned to keep pushing through.
Either way, it doesn’t stay the same on its own.
I’m Attiya Awadallah, a Licensed Creative Arts Therapist in New York, and I specialize in working with people who are used to functioning at a high level but feel the internal cost of that over time.
In sessions, I’m direct and honest about what I’m noticing, while making sure the work stays grounded and manageable.
I use an integrative approach that may include EMDR, somatic therapy, and art therapy to work with both the mental and physical impact of what you’ve been carrying.
This allows us to go beyond understanding what’s happening and begin shifting how it actually shows up in your day-to-day life.

What Therapy for Burnout and Overwhelm Looks Like
Burnout is more common than people think, especially among high-functioning adults.
Recent research shows that over half of professionals report experiencing burnout at some point, often while still continuing to perform at a high level. That’s part of what makes it easy to overlook.
Burnout isn’t just about needing rest. It often reflects patterns that have been building over time, including pressure, overextension, and how you’ve learned to keep going even when something feels off.
In therapy, the focus is on helping those patterns shift so you’re not staying in the same cycle.
I use an integrative approach that may include EMDR, somatic therapy, and art therapy, depending on how you respond and what helps things move.
Sessions focus on:
-
Understanding what’s been building beneath the surface
-
Working with how stress and pressure are held in your body
-
Shifting patterns that keep you stuck in cycles of overextension
-
Reconnecting with clarity, direction, and a sense of internal space
What Can Change
As the work progresses:
-
You’re not pushing through everything in the same way
-
Decisions feel clearer and less mentally exhausting
-
Your body feels less tense and more settled
-
You’re able to step back instead of staying in constant pressure
-
Work and responsibility feel more manageable without the same level of strain
At some point, you notice you have more energy, more clarity, and more choice in how you move through your day.
